Travel to The World’s Second Largest Karst Landscape

Story by. Ahmad Yani Hasti

Let’s meet my new friend. His name is Farzad Besharat. He was born in Afghanistan and grew up in Pakistan. He has lived in Indonesia about three years. He says, “I will always love to stay in Indonesia”. Why not? There are a lot reasons why we should love Indonesia. One of all the reasons is that Indonesia has many beautiful places.

This Monday (January 9th, 2017), we are going to travel in Rammang-Rammang. We have planned this about a week and I am really excited about how wonderful this place looks.

Rammang-Rammang is a good place with all nature beauty, green scenery, where you can access the awesome Karst landscape in Maros and Pangkep Regency. Precisely in the north of Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia, Karst Maros-Pangkep is only between 50-100 kilometers from Makassar City.

Covering about 43.750 hectares area, Karst Maros-Pangkep becomes the Second Largest Karst Landscape in The World. The Karst landscape is hilly with beautiful mountainous terrains.

Not only presenting a unique landscape, The Karst Maros-Pangkep is also having archeological sources of prehistoric caves and its heritage back to thousands of years ago. In this region, there are hundreds of caves with stalactites and stalagmites, of which 89 of them are prehistoric caves that contain prehistoric rock and ancient art painting.

As a unique natural habitat with its significant value and also important for biodiversity conservation, Karst Maros-Pangkep is a place that must be on travel list for nature lover. Lots of flora and fauna live in this place which makes it all the more beautiful and interesting to visit here.
